Selection Criteria

The Intersection Crash Ranking Interactive Report provides crash type, intersection crash cost based on the average crash type cost and ranking information for selected intersections. Ranking is within a selected area and is based either on crash frequency or crash cost. For example, a rank number of 10 means that there are 9 worse intersections based on the criteria chosen.

The report can extract information using 2 types of query :

1. Intersection query
2. Area ranking query

Intersection Extraction Criteria

1. Intersection query

* Intersection query allows you to select a specific intersection in a Local Authority by selecting Local Authority and street names.

Note: If an intersection could not be found in the selected Local Authority that could most likely be that the intersection is at the boundary between two LGs, in which case one can search for the intersection crash details by selecting the other LG sharing the intersection of interest at the boundary.

2. Area ranking query

* Area ranking query allows you to rank intersection(s) with area option of State, Metro, Country, Local Authority or Region.

* The Intersection(s) can be ranked by different road classifications.

* The intersection(s) can be ranked either by crash frequency or crash costs.

* The query also allows you to key in the number of intersections you are interested to list and rank.

The report covers all intersections which have had at least one or more reported road crashes over the 5 year period ending 31-12-2022.

In addition to a ranking number, the list provides information on crash type frequencies and crash costs. The definitions of crash types can be found here. Crash types chosen for the list are not mutually exclusive and therefore the listed frequencies will not sum to the all type total.

A crash type is highlighted when it occurs at a frequency greater than expected and such highlighting denotes a potential problem with this crash type. The expected frequency is based on the average proportion of the crash type over all intersections. A statistical test is employed to ensure that any difference highlighted is real and not due to chance fluctuations in small crash numbers.
